Ammo issue

Problem with milsurp ammo, perhaps someone can point me in the right direction.

I acquired some 1950s Yugo 8mm ammo for my M24/47, but so far only ~ 60% of the rounds are firing. That seems abnormally high for even 60-y0 milsurp ammo. I looked at the misfires and the primer indent looks OK, but not especially deep.

Is there a way to improve the primer strike by the firing pin, or did I just get a bad load of ammo and there's nothing to be done about it?

Thanks.

I had a high mis-fire rate when I first shot my 24/47. I discovered that the bolt interior was totally clogged with cosmo. After a thorough cleaning it's been fine.

It's possible you firing pin spring is just weak. If you do a search you'll find several posts were people replaced the firing pin spring with a new spring from Wolff which solved their Yugo ammo misfire problems. I don't have any springs from them (yet) but they are at gunsprings.com

I have had this same problem with 50's Yugo surplus ammo in my m24/47, about 60% fire. My rifle has been thoroughly cleaned and cleared of cosmoline and Romanian surplus has never been a problem, all fire. I ordered a Wolff 22lb. spring but they are backed up on shipping so it will take a while (2 weeks!). I will keep you posted if it fixes my problem.

+1 on the 22 pound spring. Some 50s Yugo 8mm won't even go off with the heavier springs, but it will always go off on the second hit. The primers on the 50s Yuge are hard AND deep set. A bad combination.

Makes me glad I have a decent stash of Romanian 8mm. It is steel case but sure fire every single time!!! I might put some up for sale in the Marketplace tomorrow if I get the time.
